Dopamine enhancers. Drugs that stimulate dopamine release or act as dopamine agonists can improve sexual performance while patients continue to take SSRIs. Dopamine-enhancing medications used for sexual dysfunction include amantadine (Symmetrel), dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), methlyphenidate (Ritalin), and pemoline (Cylert). Amantadine, most commonly known for use in influenza and Parkinson's disease, has proved effective for sexual dysfunction caused by SSRIs. Dextroamphetamine, methylphenidate, and pemoline, drugs used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, also have found support among clinicians. These agents attack the problem head on: If diminished dopamine accounts for sexual dysfunction, then increasing dopamine effects reduces sexual dysfunction.
